Year 2009 author note: The author found white calcite rocks inside the grey limestone rocks in
Hunan province, P.R.China. The calcite rock is a vein of grains less than 10 mm x 10 mm x 10 mm.
It evaporated in the family cooking hearth with fire cracking sound.
APPENDIX 9 The estimation of the length of tensile stress zone behind a crack tip in a short
rod fracture toughness specimen when the crack approaches the back face of the specimen
A35
A36
A37
Year 2009 author note: The author used the Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet to solve the equations
without the original three simplifying assumptions and simplifications. The new results are
within the original tolerance for the FPZ length.
See Appendix 9B
